Sarah Granger, aka Sairy, first got online in 1982 at age 9 with a 300 baud modem. Five years later, she launched her own computer bulletin board system, the precursor to modern day websites and blogs. By 17, she was a published poet and at 20, she had her first academic paper in print. In 1995, she directed and co-produced the first stage play she had written (in 1993). She began writing frequently for newsletters and had her first paid writing project in 1998. She began blogging in 2002, while continuing to publish professional articles and book excerpts in addition to editing. She has now written for over three dozen publications and continues to enjoy writing in any form.
Meanwhile, Sarah’s love of technology and the arts flourished and she began taking an interest in global affairs. In particular, she studied how information technology affects society, and she designed her own major at the University of Michigan to reflect that interest. Continuing on that thread, most of Sarah’s professional work has followed that path – in IT security, Internet start-ups, for tech policy and advocacy organizations, in online politics, in web publishing, immersed in geek culture, and finally to “gov 2.0″ introducing government to social media. She continues to follow her mission of educating people and organizations about information technology and new media and their roles in the world.

The nickname ‘Sairy’ was coined by Sarah’s high school friend, Chris Baty, who went on to start the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) phenomenon. Somehow, the nickname stuck and it was an easy 5 letter domain for Sarah to get several years later. So she kept the nickname and now people all over the world know her as Sairy from her blog and Twitter.
